The Kilns Watchman is responsible for operating wood and gas boilers within parameters while maintaining adequate steam pressure.
Assist kiln supervisor with conditioning, starting, and stopping of kilns. Check for kiln process errors and correct as needed. - Perform proper boiler fuel mixing and usage. Perform sawmill chip removal and decking. - Load sawdust, bark, and sawmill chip trucks as needed. - Assist with plant snow removal as directed. (seasonal) - Check and grease all boiler related bearings. - Check and maintain all boiler related feed screws and belts. - Operate front end loader, forklift, scissors lift, and bucket lift as needed. - Perform safety and maintenance checks on equipment as directed. - Remove and dispose of top and bottom ash. - Keep boiler room and related areas clean of all combustibles. - Test boiler water chemistry and apply treatment within specifications. Test low water cutoffs daily. - Close and open steam valves and headers. - Generate weekly fire systems report. - Regularly check diesel and electric fire pumps for proper operating and readiness condition. Check and maintain hose stations. - Perform fire, water, electrical, and security watches as directed by supervisor. - Plant gate admittance during non-production hours. - Contact emergency agencies if needed. - Comply with all federal, state, and local regulations when operating boilers and with all NHD safety regulations.
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent Experience: Mechanical, electrical, computer, and heavy equipment operation experience; strong attention to detail, good written and verbal communication skills; ability to make clear and correct decisions under pressure.
